Can you get a mental block when you yourself have an empty canvas in front of you? And the kids assert, β€œDraw something! Draw something!” – I usually wind up drawing a rose, or sometimes a range, but then I’m stumped. I feel the exact same way with a giant blank driveway and sidewalk chalk, except it’s so much worse! What have you been supposed to draw on a giant blank driveway!? (I’d probably still draw my typical flower and rainbow…).

We have a large box of sidewalk chalk sitting in the closet right now. But to share with you the truth, we aren’t NEARLY this creative with it. I think the situation (besides our creativity) is that people have an outdoor patio stone driveway and exactly the same with this patio in the backyard. So the kids take the chalk colours and fill in every the tiny, rectangular bricks in different colours. Sometimes they venture into the play house attached for their swing set and they’ll colour the walls inside too (they’re not supposed to, but wow, they really moved fast that first time before I noticed, and now they know they are able to break free with it. Little tricksters…)

If there is only 1 item to obtain us through the long summer days, it would be Sidewalk Chalk for the win. Not only is it super inexpensive, but it’s great for all ages and has unlimited play potential. And really, what’s better than the usual β€œmessy” activity with NO clean-up?!

And then one of our baby sitters let the youngsters colour a some of the bricks on the house last year. That was a negative idea. Don’t colour the bricks on your house unless you want to get a wash brush and work out how to get everything off. It’s been there for nearly per year now, and even with pelting rains and lots of snow storms it’s as bright as your day it happened. I guess I really could find a scrub brush and scrub it off, but who has the time for that??
