Can you get a mental block if you have a bare canvas facing you? And your children are saying, “Draw something! Draw something!” – I usually wind up drawing a rose, or sometimes a range, but I’m stumped. Personally i think the exact same way with a huge blank driveway and sidewalk chalk, except it’s so much worse! What are you likely to draw on a giant blank driveway!? (I’d probably still draw my typical flower and rainbow…).
We’ve a large box of sidewalk chalk sitting in the closet right now. But to tell you the truth, we aren’t NEARLY this creative with it. I believe the issue (besides our creativity) is that people have an outdoor patio stone driveway and exactly the same with our patio in the backyard. So the children take the chalk colours and fill in most the tiny, rectangular bricks in different colours. Sometimes they venture to the play house attached with their swing set and they’ll colour the walls in there too (they’re not likely to, but wow, they really moved fast that first time before I noticed, and now they know they could get away with it. Little tricksters…)
If there clearly was only 1 item to get us through the long summer days, it will be Sidewalk Chalk for the win. Not only is it super inexpensive, but it’s perfect for all ages and has unlimited play potential. And really, what’s better when compared to a “messy” activity with NO clean-up?!

And the other of our baby sitters let the children colour a few of the bricks on the house last year. Which was a bad idea. Don’t colour the bricks on your property unless you wish to get a scrub brush and work out how to obtain everything off. It’s been there for almost annually now, and despite having pelting rains and lots of snow storms it’s as bright as the afternoon it happened. Perhaps I really could find a polish brush and scrub it off, but who has the full time for that??
This list is fantastic if you need a bit of inspiration to take your sidewalk chalk from the boring game of X’s and O’s or hopscotch to a fun “Wow, that’s so amazing!” adventure!
