Can you get a mental block if you have a bare canvas facing you? And your children are saying, “Draw something! Draw something!” – I usually wind up drawing a rose, or sometimes a range, but I’m stumped. Personally i think exactly the same way with a giant blank driveway and sidewalk chalk, except it’s so much worse! What are you currently likely to draw on a giant blank driveway!? (I’d probably still draw my typical flower and rainbow…).
We have a huge box of sidewalk chalk sitting in the closet right now. But to tell you the reality, we aren’t NEARLY this creative with it. I do believe the problem (besides our creativity) is that people have an outdoor patio stone driveway and the exact same with this patio in the backyard. So the children take the chalk colours and fill in all the small, rectangular bricks in different colours. Sometimes they venture to the play house attached with their swing set and they’ll colour the walls inside too (they’re not likely to, but wow, they really moved fast that very first time before I noticed, and now they know they could break free with it. Little tricksters…)
If there clearly was just one item to get us through the long summer days, it could be Sidewalk Chalk for the win. Not just is it super inexpensive, but it’s great for all ages and has unlimited play potential. And really, what’s better than the usual “messy” activity with NO clean-up?!

And the other of our baby sitters let the children colour a few of the bricks on the house last year. Which was a poor idea. Don’t colour the bricks on your house unless you want to get a wash brush and figure out how to have everything off. It’s been there for pretty much per year now, and even with pelting rains and plenty of snow storms it’s as bright as your day it happened. I suppose I could find a wash brush and scrub it off, but who has the time for that??
This list is fantastic if you need a little inspiration to take your sidewalk chalk from a boring game of X’s and O’s or hopscotch to a fun “Wow, that’s so amazing!” adventure!
