Can you get a mental block when you have an empty canvas in front of you? And your children assert, “Draw something! Draw something!” – I usually end up drawing a flower, or sometimes a range, but I’m stumped. I feel the same way with a giant blank driveway and sidewalk chalk, except it’s so much worse! What are you currently likely to draw on a giant blank driveway!? (I’d probably still draw my typical flower and rainbow…).
We’ve a huge box of sidewalk chalk sitting in the closet right now. But to share with you the reality, we aren’t NEARLY this creative with it. I do believe the issue (besides our creativity) is that people have an outdoor patio stone driveway and exactly the same with this patio in the backyard. So the kids take the chalk colours and fill in all the small, rectangular bricks in different colours. Sometimes they venture to the play house attached to their swing set and they’ll colour the walls within too (they’re not designed to, but wow, they really moved fast that very first time before I noticed, and now they know they can escape with it. Little tricksters…)
If there clearly was only one item to have us through the long summer days, it will be Sidewalk Chalk for the win. Not only is it super inexpensive, but it’s great for all ages and has unlimited play potential. And really, what’s better than the usual “messy” activity with NO clean-up?!

And then one of our baby sitters let the kids colour a some of the bricks on our house last year. That has been a poor idea. Don’t colour the bricks on your house unless you want to get a scrub brush and work out how to have all of it off. It’s been there for pretty much a year now, and despite pelting rains and lots of snow storms it’s as bright as the day it happened. I suppose I could find a wash brush and scrub it off, but who has the time for that??
