Can you get a mental block when you have a clear canvas facing you? And the kids assert, “Draw something! Draw something!” – I usually find yourself drawing a rose, or sometimes a range, but I’m stumped. I feel exactly the same way with a giant blank driveway and sidewalk chalk, except it’s so much worse! What are you currently supposed to draw on a huge blank driveway!? (I’d probably still draw my typical flower and rainbow…).
We have a big box of sidewalk chalk sitting in the closet right now. But to share with you the facts, we aren’t NEARLY this creative with it. I believe the issue (besides our creativity) is that we have an outdoor stone driveway and the same with this patio in the backyard. So the kids take the chalk colours and fill in most the tiny, rectangular bricks in various colours. Sometimes they venture in to the play house attached to their swing set and they’ll colour the walls inside too (they’re not supposed to, but wow, they really moved fast that first time before I noticed, and now they know they could escape with it. Little tricksters…)
If there is only one item to have us through the long summer days, it would be Sidewalk Chalk for the win. Not just could it be super inexpensive, but it’s great for all ages and has unlimited play potential. And really, what’s better when compared to a “messy” activity with NO clean-up?!

And the other of our baby sitters let the children colour a several bricks on the house last year. That was a negative idea. Don’t colour the bricks on your property unless you wish to get a wash brush and work out how to get all of it off. This has been there for nearly per year now, and despite pelting rains and lots of snow storms it’s as bright as your day it happened. Perhaps I could find a polish brush and scrub it off, but who has the time for that??
This list is fantastic if you need a little inspiration to take your sidewalk chalk from the boring game of X’s and O’s or hopscotch to a fun “Wow, that’s so amazing!” adventure!
